Nick Buettner is the Vice President at Blue Zones, LLC. He is responsible for developing and implementing the Blue Zones Project in all Blue Zones Communities and corporate sites across the US.

In 2004, Nick Buettner & Dan Buettner teamed up with National Geographic and the world’s best longevity researchers to identify pockets around the world where people live measurably longer and better. In these “Blue Zones” they found that people reach age 100 at rates 10 times greater than in the United States.

After identifying 5 of the world’s Blue Zones, the Blue Zones team and National Geographic took teams of scientists to each location to identify lifestyle characteristics that might explain longevity. They found that the lifestyles of all Blue Zones residents shared nine specific characteristics. They call these characteristics the Power 9®.

For the last 12 years, Nick has been bringing these lessons to 75 communities around the United States which he will share more about at our Conference.

Reference Based Pricing (RBP) has been used by health plans for over a decade to help take control of medical benefit costs. During this interactive session attendees will learn how this solution is crossing the chasm from the early adopters to be more of a mainstream solution for brokers and their self-funded employer clients. We will also review several major initiatives including

  • Consolidated Appropriations Act
  • Hospital Price Transparency rule and regulation,

June 08, 2022

It’s back, and better than ever! Over the past two years, members of the Greater Philadelphia Association of Health Underwriters (GPAHU) have assisted businesses, individuals, and families through some of the most challenging times our country has ever experienced.

It is safe to say that our shared industry unfailingly rose to the occasion, and now, we are emerging from the pandemic stronger than ever. Plan to join us for the GPAHU event of the year as we gather, in person, with our fellow industry leaders at this year’s conference and learn how our Association is shaping health care policy both in Harrisburg and Washington, D.C., learn about the state of our insurance markets in Philadelphia, and meet with exhibitors who are delivering significant value to health care consumers.

Additionally, our keynote speaker, Boston Marathon Bombing survivor, Rebekah Gregory, will share her personal story of emerging stronger after experiencing unfathomable adversity. You will not want to miss this event!

Rebekah Gregory, Speaker, Author, Boston Marathon ? survivor

Rebekah Gregory’s life was forever changed by to the bombings at the Boston Marathon on April 15th, 2013. This act of terrorism may have claimed her leg, but it could not claim her spirit. Forced to leave her normalcy on that Boston sidewalk, Rebekah has devoted the past decade to turning her pain into her life’s purpose. There are no easy roads in life. We get what we work for but, more importantly, we get what we FIGHT for. Rebekah is well-versed in hardship and knows what it feels like when everything you have worked so hard for seems to ‘blow up’ in your face, shattering your life and spirit in the process. Will you be defeated by your challenges, or use them to become stronger? Rebekah will inspire, motivate, and share practical tools anyone can use on how to turn pain and obstacles, into real, authentic purpose. Through her gift of humor, and the ability to share from a deep and personal place, Rebekah reminds people that no matter what bombs may go off in their own lives, there is life to be lived, even if you are on your last leg!

Moneyball and the Future of Health Policy

Tuesday, August 31, 2021 | 9-10:30am

In his 2003 bestseller ”Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game”, author Michael Lewis told the story of how Oakland A’s General Manager Billy Beane used analytics to assemble a competitive baseball team despite having a (relatively) miniscule budget. Operating on a shoe-string budget, Beane and his team of data analysts used a revolutionary method of identifying hidden value in underpriced talent; a method that has since upended the whole of professional sports. As politicians across the country continue to fall back on the same old health policy talking points, how can we take the lessons from Moneyball to create a new vision of health policy?

Please join GPAHU President Scott Wham, Esq., Director of Compliance and Innovation at Kistler Tiffany Benefits, as he explores how the lessons from Moneyball can be used to shape a new path for health policy, influence how we position our value-proposition with our clients, and identify opportunities for improving the everyday health of the individuals we serve.

2021: Year of the Healthcare Reset The Employer’s Perspective

Thursday May 20th

The Oral-Systemic Connection & Why Aren’t All Dental Claims Paid?

Tuesday, May 25th , 2021

9:00-11am

The GPAHU is pleased to offer this 2 credit Continuing Education course presented by

Valerie Fleming, RDH, United Concordia’s Oral Wellness Consultant

United Concordia’s Oral Wellness Consultant, Valerie Fleming, RDH. Your smile is one of your most valuable assets. However, good oral health is more than just your smile and benefits both your smile and your whole body. This presentation covers a range of dental health topics including: prevention and treatment of common dental diseases, keeping your mouth healthy, fear of the dentist, the mouth-body connection, and strategies for incorporating dental health into overall wellness programs.

Additionally, Dental benefits are different than medical benefits and most of us do what our dentists say without question.  Everybody wants to think that their dentists are looking out for the patients’ best interests.  Yet are all of those services really necessary?  If my mouth is healthy, do I really need x-rays every 6 months or 12 months?  If that cracked tooth is not causing any problems, do I really need an extensive crown on it?  What happens when my dentist bills for a service that is not appropriate, or not necessary, and who makes that determination?  These questions will be answered and much more.

An important goal of population health management is to gather, normalize and analyze clinical data across a patient’s many care settings that can reveal opportunities to improve the patient’s health and the provider’s financial outcomes. By merging clinical care with healthcare economics and outcomes assessment, population health management can help providers, patients and insurers aggregate, exchange and analyze patient data to coordinate care and promote wellness through evidence-based decision support in clinical care. It’s important for employers to select a broker who understands the nuances of plan design and who can quickly adapt to the rapidly shifting health insurance landscape. Employers need a consultant with the know-how and resources to expertly navigate and take advantage of the current healthcare system

Population Health Management for Employer Based Insurance Plans:

Earn 2 CE credits in PA, NJ, DE

The Role of the Insurance Underwriter in Healthcare

Special Guest Speaker Paul Kane, Vice President of Underwriting and Chief Risk Officer at Independence Blue Cross will explore the central role of the Underwriter.

Underwriting plays a critical role in evaluating risk and establishing pricing that corresponds to the risk assessed. Gain valuable insight to understand how the mechanics of underwriting apply to both fully insured and partially self-insured health plans. Understanding the underwriting process specific to your market segment will better prepare you for consultative discussions with your clients that will give you an edge over the less informed consultant. Paul’s presentation will review both mid and large group market fully-insured underwriting.

Additionally, Carol Seid, Regional Group Manager for SYMETRA Life Insurance Company, will walk us though a self-insured stop-loss proposal. Chris Handley, Regional Sales Director of SAVOY, will facilitate this program.

OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGES OF CLINICAL AND COST TRANSPARENCY IN HEALTHCARE

As consumers take more responsibility for health care decisions, the demand for provider-specific information on health care costs and quality is gaining momentum. For consumers to make informed health care, and health care financial decisions, they need meaningful, credible data. Moreover, whether you are a payer or a provider, success in our industry comes down to demonstrating higher quality at a lower cost. This 2 credit CE will discuss the use of both transparency tools and the alternatives to the traditional fee-for-service model to reduce healthcare costs and increase outcomes.
